The New Jersey State AFL-CIO is proud to join with Working Families United for New Jersey, Inc. and coalition partners to debut a brand-new state-of-the-art voter registration van which will kick our voter registration and community mobilization into high gear. Equipped with internet connections and computers, this van allows us to take our entire voter registration operation to the streets and to engage communities in the democratic process.

Labor and Community Allies Kickoff Groundbreaking Voter Registration Action Plan for Trenton Communities

The New Jersey State AFL-CIO was proud to join with several union affiliates and local community organizations at a Working Families United for New Jersey, Inc. coalition meeting in Trenton yesterday at the Lighthouse Outreach Church. The meeting generated a great deal of volunteer commitments to advance our coalition’s voter registration goals in the community. This meeting follows a successful event which took place in Newark two weeks ago and produced the same enthusiasm and eagerness to get to work.

The New Jersey State AFL-CIO and its community allies consider raising the minimum wage and including a cost of living adjustment (COLA) to be a top priority for our state. In order to provide economic stability to low-income workers, New Jersey needs a permanent fix for calculating its minimum wage, and that means establishing an annual COLA. Unfortunately, last week Governor Christie conditionally vetoed legislation seeking to increase the minimum wage and eliminated the COLA. For this reason, the only way to achieve passage in 2013 is by placing it on the ballot for voter approval.

New Jersey State AFL-CIO Commemorates Martin Luther King Day

The year 2013 marks the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech which he delivered on August 28, 1963, from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC, to 200,000 civil rights supporters during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Dr. King’s speech was a rousing call for racial equality and social and economic justice, and struck at the very core of our humanity. He presented a vision of peace and racial harmony as well as fulfilling the American promise that all citizens are created equal. His words were so powerful and optimistic that his speech remains a landmark in American history.
