Today in Trenton: Paid Family Leave Approved by Assembly
With legislative action in Trenton heating up due to the end of the month state budget deadline, today was a busy day in Trenton. Grid lock between the Governor and Legislative leadership on school funding, raiding Horizon revenues and the lottery/pension proposal has sparked talk of a government shutdown. With this in mind, several pro-labor bills advanced in an attempt to get them on the Governor’s desk before the summer recess begins.

More than 600 delegates, representing 1,000 labor unions and one million members and their families, convened at Harrah’s Atlantic City on June 20-21, 2017, for the purpose of candidate endorsements and reaffirming the priorities of the state labor movement.

Bergen County Freeholders Pass Pro-Worker Resolution in Support of Nabisco Workers

Yesterday, June 14th, the Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders, led by Freeholder Vice-Chairman, New Jersey State AFL-CIO Labor Candidate and IBEW 164 brother Thomas J. Sullivan, passed a resolution authorizing support for Nabisco Workers and the protection of American jobs.
HPAE Reaches Tentative Agreement at Sunrise House Thanks to Union Solidarity

The New Jersey State AFL-CIO congratulates HPAE on reaching a tentative agreement for 120 addiction treatment workers at AAC/Sunrise House. This victory could not have been possible without the solidarity and assistance of our many affiliates, who walked with our brothers and sisters on the picket line and sent letters to management during a strike and lockout which took place over the last three weeks.

With deep regrets, the New Jersey State AFL-CIO would like to inform you that Helen Verhage peacefully passed away this last Sunday, June 11th, in her home at the age of 88.

New Jersey will be a focal point in the world of politics this year. We are one of two states to hold a governor’s race – the other being Virginia. All 40 state Senate seats and all 80 state Assembly seats will be up for grabs, and there will be more than 50 rank-and-file union members on the ballot this year.
Paid Family Leave Bill Clears Assembly Regulatory Oversight Committee
A-4927, the bill to expand New Jersey’s Paid Family Leave law, received a hearing in the Assembly Regulatory Oversight Committee, which voted 4 to 1 to advance the bill. We thank Speaker Prieto and Assembly members Oliver and Gusciora, who are the prime sponsors of the bill in the Assembly. We further thank all committee members who voted in support.
Urge Assembly to Support Paid Family Leave Expansion
The Assembly has introduced legislation, A-4927, to improve upon our state’s successful paid family leave program. The New Jersey State AFL-CIO and its affiliates championed the original law that was enacted in 2009. Now, with your support, we can make this policy even better for working families.
