National Protest of Walmart: New Jersey Unions and Community Partners to Join in Secaucus, NJ to Demand Respect and Fair Wages at Walmart
This Black Friday, November 29, 2013, workers, union members, and community partners will convene outside of Walmart stores all around the nation to protest the company’s poverty wages, workers’ rights violations, ruthless greed, and shameful business practices that undermine worker safety in our New Jersey communities and around the globe.
Walmart Holds Food Drive for Workers Rather than Paying Them a Fair Wage
As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, a Walmart store in Ohio decided that the best way to show its appreciation for their employees was to hold a food drive for them. A number of bins were placed out with signs asking customers to donate to employees so that they could enjoy Thanksgiving dinner. It is outrageous that one of the world’s most profitable corporations – which made $15.7 billion in profits last year alone – is paying their workers so little that they are unable to provide their families with a decent Thanksgiving meal.
Post-Election “Raise the Wage” Press Conference Highlights Minimum Wage Victory and Benefits to State
The New Jersey State AFL-CIO was proud to join with Working Families United for New Jersey, Inc. today for a press conference to celebrate and reflect on yesterday’s monumental victory and the historic approval of Ballot Question #2. The conference featured coalition partners, Senate President Steve Sweeney – one of the prime sponsors of the minimum wage, Trenton Councilwoman Marge-Caldwell Wilson, and Tayzia Treadwell, one of the many workers who will benefit from the minimum wage increase.

Tomorrow is Election Day. Polls will be open from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and we urge everyone who casts a ballot to please vote “Yes” on Ballot Question #2 to raise the minimum wage. This election is unique in that New Jersey residents have the power to vote for an increase in the minimum wage and will have the final say on this critical state policy. Therefore, it is vitally important that you make your voice heard on Tuesday, November 5th.New York Times, South Jersey Times, and Times of Trenton All Say Vote “Yes” on Ballot Question #2
Yet another three newspapers have indicated their support for Ballot Question #2 to raise New Jersey’s minimum wage. The New York Times, South Jersey Times, and Times of Trenton have brought the total number of major newspaper endorsements up to six. Previous endorsements include the Star-Ledger, the Courier Post, and the Daily Journal.
