965 Labor Candidate Victories

Labor has done it again. The election of Sister Dahlia Vertreese, IUOE 68, as the Mayor of Hillside is a victory that bears the union label. Labor’s efforts were the heart and soul of this operation as hundreds of our brothers and sisters from across the region spent all week knocking on doors, planting lawn signs, distributing mail, and making calls late into the evening around the holidays – all following a rigorous campaign for the general election just a month ago.

The Hillside runoff election takes place tomorrow, and union members from near and far will mobilize in support of Sister Dahlia Vertreese in her race for mayor. Labor walks, phone banks, and other GOTV activities will run throughout the day and be staged from Dahlia Vertreese Campaign Headquarters at the following time and place.

The Hillside runoff election is 3 days away, and this morning more than 80 union volunteers were out in force. If we can keep up this momentum, a victory on Tuesday, December 5th is all but certain. This will be a tight race decided by only a few votes, and there is no doubt that the edge will go to the side that works the hardest.

Our union Sister Dahlia Vertreese of IUOE 68 is running for Hillside Mayor and needs your support to win. There has been a strong showing from a couple of unions, but we need to engage the full strength of our labor movement and rally behind our sister as we did for our endorsed candidates in November.

With the Hillside runoff election only 10 days away, labor hasn’t let up in its effort to elect our union Sister Dahlia Vertreese as the town’s next mayor. Even over the holiday weekend with most families discussing politics at the table, labor is talking as well as walking to bring a positive change to the community.

Labor won big this year, and the news just got better. After a tight race for Florence Township Council, our brother from LIUNA 172, Frank Baldorossi, Jr., prevailed. The final vote tally was 645 to 624, a difference of only 21 votes. We also congratulate IBEW 351 Brother Steve Light, who was elected to serve as a member of Absecon Council and our brother from IBEW 3, Michael Soriano, who secured a major victory in his race for Parsippany mayor.

In addition to securing a victory in the gubernatorial election, the labor movement was also successful in expanding pro-worker majorities in the New Jersey State Legislature, an achievement that separates New Jersey from the rest of the nation, and will ensure that organized labor shapes the future policies of our state.

The results of New Jersey’s critical gubernatorial election are in, and the election of Phil Murphy as Governor and Sheila Oliver as Lieutenant Governor, speaks to the unmatched mobilization efforts of organized labor and the New Jersey State AFL-CIO’s political program that is unparalleled by any other in our state or nation.
