Affiliated unions make NJ labor history by delegating dozens of young workers to participate in the annual endorsement conference

ATLANTIC CITY – More than 600 delegates representing 1,000 labor unions and 1 million members of the New Jersey State AFL-CIO convened at Caesars Atlantic City June 16 & 17, 2015, to participate in the endorsement process for one New Jersey Senate seat, 80 state Assembly seats and for a slate of 48 rank-and-file union members seeking public offices at every level of government.

The New Jersey Labor Movement has built the best Labor Candidates Program in the country. Rank-and-file union members have won 817 elections and now represent working families in public offices within the State Senate and Assembly, on County Freeholder Boards, in our towns as Mayors, Aldermen, Committee and Council Members, Fire Commissioners, and on School Boards across the state.

Your hard work paid off bigtime on Election Day with impressive wins for New Jersey State AFL-CIO labor-endorsed candidates at every level of government. Despite some disappointing results across the nation, New Jersey was a beacon of hope, winning important Election Day victories on the federal, state and local level. Thanks to the vigilance of labor volunteers, union brother Donald Norcross, IBEW Local 351, and Bonnie Watson Coleman, the first African-American woman to represent New Jersey, were elected to Congress, and Sen. Cory Booker was elected to his first full term as a U.S. Senator.

The New Jersey State AFL-CIO-sponsored 2014 Labor Walk Program is a success because of our affiliates, whose leaders and members understand that we can make a difference when we all work together.

Whether it’s devoting lunch hours to assembling candidate packets or spending Saturday mornings knocking on union members’ doors to inform them about their choices in the upcoming election, our union volunteers are THE reason the New Jersey State AFL-CIO-sponsored Labor Walk Program is the most successful in the country.

Your efforts are essential for success at the polls on Election Day. Every union leader is strongly encouraged to provide volunteers for Election Day Get-Out-The-Vote.

In a matter of five weeks an astounding 94,325 union household doors have been knocked on thanks to the unflagging resolve and solidarity of Labor 2014 volunteers. This number was featured prominently in this week’s edition of Politifax, one of New Jersey’s most widely read political newsletters.

With Election Day only 15 days away, much work remains. Our efforts on the phones are essential for success at the polls on Election Day and we will need all hands on deck.

New Jersey’s working families need relief. Job growth has not kept pace with our neighbors. Workers of all income levels except millionaires have seen their take-home pay drop and their spending power decline.

Elections are about voting for candidates on the local, state and federal level who share our values and will help us attain our dreams. This year’s labor-supported candidates – including 42 rank-and-file labor candidates -- are counting on our support.

The labor movement is counting on you to ensure that we elect Cory Booker to the U.S. Senate, all endorsed Congressional candidates and 42 rank-and-file labor candidates. Every affiliated union is strongly encouraged to provide volunteers for labor walks each Saturday  between 9:00 am – 12:00 noon leading up to November 4th.
